Custom deck design & build

We start with the house, not a catalog: where the doors are, where the sun hits, how the grade falls away, and how you plan to use the space. From there, we design the framing, set footings below the local frost line, and properly flash the ledger so the finished deck is strong, dry, and built to last.

Composite & PVC decking

Composite and PVC boards come in a wide range of colors and textures, with hidden fasteners for a clean surface. Composite offers excellent value and the broadest selection, while PVC provides maximum resistance to moisture, staining, and fading. Neither needs staining or sealing—just occasional washing. See the materials comparison for the full trade-offs.

Pressure-treated wood decks

Pressure-treated wood is the most affordable way to get a properly built deck and remains the right choice for many projects. The treatment helps the wood resist moisture, rot, and insects, while the natural surface can be stained in nearly any color. It requires washing and restaining every year or two, and we’ll be upfront about that.

Screened porches & covered decks

Adding a roof lets you use the space through more of the year. Screened porches keep bugs out on summer evenings, while covered decks protect you and the decking from rain and snow. Both require substantial structural work, including properly supported posts, beams, and roof framing tied securely into the house.

Railings, stairs & deck lighting

We install code-compliant railing systems in wood, aluminum, composite, PVC, vinyl, cable, glass, and stainless steel. We also build solid, secure stairs and integrate low-voltage lighting into posts, risers, and beneath the rails. Installing these details while the deck is open creates a cleaner result and costs far less than adding them later.

Deck repairs, restoration & rebuilds

We handle full tear-offs, structural repairs, and resurfacing. Every evaluation starts with the ledger, footings, and framing because those components determine whether a deck is safe and worth saving. If the structure is sound, resurfacing can be an excellent value. If it isn’t, we’ll show you what we found and explain the options clearly.

Pergolas & shade structures

We build shade where the afternoon sun would otherwise make a deck uncomfortable or unusable. Pergolas and shade structures can be freestanding or attached to the house, with proportions that suit the space and architecture. Each one is sized and framed to handle local weather and real snow loads—not just to look good on paper.

Outdoor living spaces

We design the whole outdoor space: decks that connect cleanly with patios and landscaping, outdoor kitchens, fire features, built-in benches and planters, and changes in elevation that make a sloped yard usable. Each element is planned to work together, creating a finished space that feels natural to the house and practical for everyday life.

See the services page for how each of these is built, or look at finished work.

Materials

Pressure-treated, composite, PVC or premium wood

The decking you choose sets both what the deck costs upfront and what it asks of you every year afterwards. There is no single right answer — it depends on your budget, how much upkeep you want, and how you want it to look in ten years.

Good

Pressure-treated wood

Real wood, treated to resist moisture, rot and insects. The lowest cost of entry and still a properly good deck. It wants washing and re-staining every year or two, and it can be refinished to any color you like later on.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Clean & re-stain
  • Typical life 15–20 yrs
  • Best for Good value
Better

Composite

Wood fibre and recycled plastic, capped with a protective shell. No staining, no sealing — a wash once or twice a year is the whole job. The widest color and texture range of the three, and where most of our clients end up.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Wash only
  • Typical life 25–30 yrs
  • Best for Maintenance free
Best

PVC

Fully synthetic, with no wood content at all — so there is nothing in the board for moisture to get into. The most resistant to staining and fading, noticeably cooler underfoot than dark composite, and it carries the longest warranties.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Wash only
  • Typical life 30–50 yrs
  • Best for Durability
Specialty

Premium wood

Naturally durable timber rather than treated softwood — western red cedar, redwood, and dense tropical hardwoods like ipe and mahogany. Grain and color no manufactured board quite matches, and ipe is harder underfoot than anything else here.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Oil yearly
  • Typical life 20–40 yrs
  • Best for Natural beauty
Railings

Wood, aluminum, synthetic or view-focused

The railing decides how much of the view survives, and it is the part of the deck people put their hands on. All four systems are installed to code.

Good

Wood railings

Built from the same material as the deck, so the two read as one run. Posts, top and bottom rails, and either wood or square metal balusters. The cheapest way to enclose a deck — and it wants the same re-staining the boards do.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Clean & re-stain
  • Typical life 15–20 yrs
  • Best for Matching the deck
Better

Aluminum railings

Powder-coated aluminum, usually in black, bronze or white. It will not rot, rust, warp or need re-coating, and the posts are slimmer than anything you can cut from wood — so more of the view survives the railing.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Wash only
  • Typical life 30+ yrs
  • Best for Set and forget
Best

Composite, PVC & vinyl railings

The rail systems the decking manufacturers build to match their own boards — same color, same cap, same texture. Heavier profiles than aluminum, so more of the view goes into the rail, but nothing ties into the deck this cleanly.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Wash only
  • Typical life 25–30 yrs
  • Best for Color-matched decks
Premium

View-focused railings Cable, glass, stainless

Whatever puts the least material between a chair on the deck and what you are looking at. Cable needs posts stiff enough to take the tension without drawing in; glass shows every rain spot. Both earn it where there is a view worth keeping.

  • Upfront cost $$$$
  • Upkeep Tension or clean
  • Typical life 30+ yrs
  • Best for Keeping the view

How it works

From first call to finished deck

1 · We talk

Call and tell us what you are thinking. You do not need dimensions, a material picked out, or a finished plan — that is our job. Our line is answered around the clock, so you are not leaving a voicemail into the dark.

2 · We look at the house

We come out and look at the site properly: where the deck can attach, how the ground falls away, what the frost line and the local code require. Then you get a written scope and a price, in writing, before anything is committed.

3 · We build it

Framing, decking, railings, stairs and lighting. You know who is coming and roughly when, and the site gets cleaned up at the end of it rather than left for you to deal with.

Where we work

Two states, two bases

DEXPERTS builds across Vermont and across South Carolina. Vermont is our home state and we take work anywhere in it, running out of Colchester on the Lake Champlain side. That means Burlington, South Burlington, Essex, Williston, Shelburne, Winooski and Milton close to home; St. Albans, Swanton and the Champlain Islands to the north; Stowe, Morrisville, Waterbury, Montpelier and Barre through the middle of the state; Vergennes, Middlebury and Bristol down the valley; and Rutland, Randolph, White River Junction, Woodstock, St. Johnsbury, Newport, Springfield, Brattleboro and Bennington beyond that. Our South Carolina work runs out of Myrtle Beach and covers the Grand Strand along with the country behind it: North Myrtle Beach, Little River, Surfside Beach, Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island and Georgetown down the coast; Conway, Carolina Forest, Socastee, Loris and Aynor inland; and out as far as Marion, Mullins, Johnsonville, Hemingway and Andrews.

Two very different climates, and they ask different things of a deck — hard freeze-thaw and snow load in Vermont, salt air, humidity and sun in coastal South Carolina. If you are not sure whether you are in range, just ask.

Who we are

Why DEXPERTS only builds decks

Dexperts was founded for one reason — to do decks better.

The name says it all: Dexperts, a playful take on “Deck Experts.”

We believe a well-built deck or outdoor space is one of the highest-value improvements a home can receive. It expands living space, strengthens the connection between house and landscape, and becomes the place where people actually spend their time. That deserves specialized attention — not to be treated as just another line item on a broader construction job.

Our mission is straightforward. Dexperts focuses solely on decks and outdoor living. By specializing, we work more efficiently, price more transparently, and give every project the focused attention it deserves. No unnecessary middlemen. No diluted priorities.

Common questions

What homeowners ask us first

What does a new deck cost?

It depends on size, height off the ground, decking material, railing system and what the site makes us do for footings and access — which is why nobody can give you a real number over the phone. We look at the house and give you a written price before you commit to anything.

Should I choose composite or pressure-treated?

Pressure-treated costs the least upfront and can be stained any color, but it wants cleaning and re-staining every year or two. Composite and PVC cost more to install and then essentially stop asking anything of you beyond a wash. The materials comparison lays out the trade-offs side by side.

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Most towns require one for a new deck, and for a rebuild that touches the framing or the ledger. Requirements vary town to town in both states, so we will tell you what yours asks for rather than guessing at it.

Can you repair my deck instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Boards, railings and stairs can usually be replaced on sound framing. What decides it is the structure underneath — the posts, the beams and especially the ledger where the deck meets the house. We will tell you straight which one you are looking at.

What railing options do you offer?

Wood, aluminum, composite, PVC, vinyl, cable, glass and stainless steel. Cable and glass keep a view open, which matters on a lake or an ocean lot; aluminum and composite are the low-maintenance workhorses. All of it installed to code.

Do you really work in both Vermont and South Carolina?

Yes. We are based in Colchester, Vermont and in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and we build across both states. The two climates are very different, and we build differently for each.

My deck feels unsafe. What should I do?

Stop using it and call us. Do not let anyone stand on a deck that moves, sags or has a railing that gives. We cannot judge a structure over the phone, but we can get out and look at it — and if anyone is in immediate danger, call emergency services first.
